APTP teen artists and staff artists meet throughout the year to read and discuss both fiction and non-fiction. These gatherings usually take place at the home of Artistic Director, David Feiner, and over a home-cooked meal prepared by David.
For many ensemble members, the APTP Book Discussion Group has been the first time when they read an entire book, cover to cover. As one of its goals, the Book Discussion Group seeks to instill in teens the desire, skills, and habits of becoming lifelong readers and learners. The Book Discussion Group also fosters and exercises in teens and staff one of the most fundamental skills emphasized at APTP: critical thinking.
Another literary tradition at APTP happens at the end of the run of each production. Co-Founders David Feiner and Laura Wiley give each member of the cast and production team the gift of a book, specifically chosen by David and Laura for that ensemble member. Since the death of Laura in 2007, David will carry on this beloved tradition.
Here is a list of some of the books APTP has read in recent years:
|
Amazing Grace
The Bean Trees
Black Dog of Fate
The History of Love
The Kite Runner
Maus |
The Metamorphosis
One Hundred Years of Solitude
Persepolis
A Problem from Hell: America in the Age of Genocide
The Sparrow
The Things They Carried |
The gift that every APTP artist receives from David and Laura at the conclusion of their first production with the company is a copy of The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho. This tradition started with APTP's first production, and has continued for ten years.
